Independence avenue in Minsk can become the UNESCO Heritage sight!

Independence Avenue of Minsk has been recognized the monument of the 1st category of the world significance in accordance with the decision of the Republican Scientific and Methodological Council on the issues of historical and cultural heritage under the Ministry of Culture of Belarus. This stage is necessary to prepare the architectural ensemble for the nomination for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List. This part of the avenue is regarded an extraordinary example of the “Stalin” or “Socialist” empire style which incorporates several architectural styles, that is, baroque, empire of the era of Napoleon, late classicism and even art deco. During the Second World War Minsk was destroyed almost entirely and was rebuilt by the best Soviet architects to become one of the best examples of the unique architectural ensemble in a Grand manner. Participating architects thought through every detail: from stucco molding on houses to the design of lampposts. The latter, in turn, are decorated with a pattern of a national symbol - Slutsk sashes with the mail element of the pattern being a corn flower – national flower of Belarus. Most likely Independence Avenue of Minsk will be summited for competition along with the key streets of Moscow, Kiev, Kharkov, Berlin, and Warsaw. The theme of the nomination is “Socialist post-war architecture in Central and Eastern Europe”
