The town is situated 187 kilometers from Vitebsk. It is not by chance that it got another name the «Belarusian Venice» for there are 5 lakes and the river within the limits of the town. In the whole of the Glubokskiy district there are 106 lakes with the Dolgoye (the Long) lake, the deepest one in Belarus (53.6 m). Glubokoye is also called the «Cherry Сapital» of Belarus. At the entrance into the city from Polotsk, 1,414 cherry seedlings were planted. Cherry trees can be found in the garden of any house, and cherry drawings can be seen on flower beds and at bus stops. It is a fascinating experience to see some unique examples of the architecture of the past centuries among all those lakes and the abundance of cherry trees especially in the spring when the gardens are in full blossom.
The cathedral was built in 1654 and originally was the Catholic Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary of the Carmelite Order. It was the first monument and the most complete expression of the Vilno Baroque School of architecture on the territory of Belarus. The construction of the cathedral was financed by the owner of the part of Glubokoye, governor of the town of Mstislavl Josef Korsak, who initially personally supervised the construction. In 1735, the cathedral was rebuilt to incorporate more features characteristic of the Vilno Baroque School: new multi-tiered towers of the main facade with elongated proportions decreasing upwards were added. In July 1812, during his stay in Glubokoye Napoleon made the Carmelite monastery his residence, more precisely he occupied the three cells of the upper floor of the residential building. He was genuinely impressed by the extraordinary beauty of the cathedral and regretted he could not take it to Paris. He thought it would have deserved to be put next to Notre Dame. In 1865 it was closed and soon the cathedra was placed at the disposal of the Orthodox Church. It was consecrated as the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin and since then it has been the main Russian Orthodox Church in the town.
The temple was built with the money of Jozef Korsak, the founder of the Catholic Cathedral of the Assumption of Our Lady (now Russian Orthodox Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary) in 1643. It was wooden, so in 1783, a baroque brick church was erected instead. It was much smaller in size than the one you will see now. At the end of the 19th century there were many believers in Glubokoye, and there was not enough space for everyone. In 1902, a large-scale reconstruction was launched. The building was expanded by the construction of two transepts (transverse naves crossing the main, longitudinal nave at right angles); the apse was moved to a considerable distance. Since the dimensions were increased, it was necessary to vertically increase the building, so two tiers of towers were added. The work was carried out until 1908. The artist Yazep Drozdovich (1888-1954) was baptized in the church of the Holy Trinity.
The monument to Jesus and the Samaritan woman was erected In 2014 on Cathedral Square.
