It is really worth to visit the agro town of Sarya to see a marvelous church (distance from Vitebsk 150 km). The church was built in the English pseudo-Gothic style, fashionable in the Russian Empire in the 40-50s of the 19th century. The outside walls are decorated with flat Gothic pilasters, the completion of which are high and amazingly slender towers, the purpose of which, of course, is to decorate the building. The towers are installed around the entire perimeter of the roof and, together with a patterned parapet, enveloping them like a garland; they look like kind of a grand royal crown. They are made of small figured brick of the palm size with a hole in the middle. Brick, by the way, was produced at a brick factory in Sarya itself and was famous for its durability and bright colors.
Since 1506 the village of Sarya was the estate of one of the most famous princes, the Sapegas. In 2 centuries it was bought by Nikolay Lopatinskiy, who was fascinated by this small piece of land with unique nature and enchanting atmosphere. He built a manor and magnificent park on this site. Unfortunately, the manor has not survived to this day except the pillars which previously served the main entrance into the manor.
In the 19th century the owner of the estate was Ignat Lopatinskiy. He fell in love with a beautiful but a very poor girl who did not have a dowry as such. Still he married her and was extremely happy. His young wife Mariya, nee Shumskaya, felt the same. Unfortunately, soon a misfortune occurred in the young family - their first-born died. However, this only strengthened the love of the couple. Soon, a second child was born and the third one was due. Unfortunately, Mariya died giving birth to the third child. The unhappy man had been spending hours on her grave but pulled himself together and decided to devote the rest of his life to his children born in that happy marriage.
He invited the architect from Germany, Gustav Schacht, to erect a beautiful church in memory of his beloved wife Mariya and their first-born. The church was completed in 1857 and consecrated in honor of St. Mariya. A huge and beautiful park was planted around the church.
One would not have been able to find a better place to put a monument to a married couple symbolizing a happy family, the main value in the Christian religion. It is here in Sarya there is an amazing cathedral in honor of the greatest love of a landlord Ignat Lopatinskiy for his wife Mariya, nee Shumskaya, which can be compared only to that of the holy spouses Peter and Fevroniya, who carried love for each other through all the trials and died on the same day and hour on July 8, 1228. The monument was opened on July 8, 2011 on the Day of family, love and faithfulness. Believers come to both the church and the monument to pray for creating a family, giving birth to a baby, pure love and family well-being.
